Slow-motion Bees . . .

bigbee

We have been experiencing early Fall weather … way too early. It is the beginning of August, right? It should be in the 80’s or 90’s. Instead, our daytime temps might hit 65º and night-time temps hover around 40. After the hot humid weather, it feels great (I am not complaining) .. I love the Fall. However, it is too early and I have been seeing the strange effects of the cool weather.

For the past two days … no chipmunks or squirrels in the yard fighting with the birds for seeds (there are usually armies of them). Hummingbird feeder does not need refilling. Only two goldfinches lazily sitting in the feeder and no loons singing. It is rather eerie in August for it to be so quiet. Are they curled up sleeping somewhere? Maybe they found a better food source? Are they going south early?

The bees are still around .. but, are moving at a snail’s pace. When they sit on the same flower for 5-10 minutes, it makes taking pictures of them easy.  😉      (click a picture for larger version in a slide show)

How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower.

  1. I like the thought of that weather. It’s still hitting the mid to high 90’s here and I’m tired of it. The bees are busy here as are the hummers and other birds.

    • Like I feared … 90’s are headed our way for the first week of school. The bees and hummers are busy here, too. I saw some maple leaves changing to reds and yellows this weekend … it seems way too early for Fall.

  2. Hi Bearyweather, You can have some of the heat we have here in Ocala – if that were possible! Ha! Your pictures of bees are quite nice. I have not noticed any honey bees here in my new area, and only a few Mason Bees and Bumblebees. Hope you’ll have a really fine Wed. tomorrow.

    • No thanks … if it was possible, I would not want it. I LOVE the cool weather.

  3. Beautiful, buzzy, bees. 🙂 Our weather is finally cooling down a bit. It’s starting to feel a little like autumn.
