Pillow Fights? . . .

Pillowfight

“There’s a double beauty whenever a swan Swims on a lake with her double thereon.” ~ Thomas Hood

This year, groups of swans have been hanging out at the lake in the little bay by my house.  The area is protected from the north winds and has a few islands of floating bog for them to walk on.  There is no doubt when they are visiting as they are quite noisy .. trumpeting, splashing and wing flapping.  Those huge wings make awesome sounds as they fly overhead, slide into the water on landing, or flap on the water when they take off .. it is amazing how those big birds fly.

The leftovers, feathers, that remain look like a pillow fight has taken place … and how they interact with each other, maybe they really do have pillow fights.  😉

The swan in the pool is singing,
And up and down doth he steer,
And, singing gently ever,
Dips under the water clear.

Veins of Life . . .

Feel its love running through your veins.”  ~ Roxana Jones

As I was searching through my fall pictures, the veins in the leaves really stood out .. although dying, still brilliant with life and color. (click on images for full-sized photos)

Slow-motion Bees . . .

We have been experiencing early Fall weather … way too early. It is the beginning of August, right? It should be in the 80’s or 90’s. Instead, our daytime temps might hit 65º and night-time temps hover around 40. After the hot humid weather, it feels great (I am not complaining) .. I love the Fall. However, it is too early and I have been seeing the strange effects of the cool weather.

For the past two days … no chipmunks or squirrels in the yard fighting with the birds for seeds (there are usually armies of them). Hummingbird feeder does not need refilling. Only two goldfinches lazily sitting in the feeder and no loons singing. It is rather eerie in August for it to be so quiet. Are they curled up sleeping somewhere? Maybe they found a better food source? Are they going south early?

The bees are still around .. but, are moving at a snail’s pace. When they sit on the same flower for 5-10 minutes, it makes taking pictures of them easy.  😉      (click a picture for larger version in a slide show)

How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower.

Fall in My Yard . . .

Here is a little glimpse at what Fall looked like in my yard a few weeks ago at the peak of color.

Every bush and tree has contributed to the grassy outdoor carpet in the woods.
